SWEEPEA DEAN - 11 year old Thoroughbred-cross gelding

2009 - 2010
Sweepea and John started the 2009 season at Intermediate with good placings at Pine Top, Surefire, and Loc Moy before moving up to Advanced at Richland Park, Five Points, and Poplar Place (CIC***).

Last fall, he was second after dressage in a huge field at the Fair Hill CCI***, but we chose not to run the Cross Country after days of rain made a quagmire of it. Not completing this important qualifier meant the Rolex was out of the question this spring, but we did not want to risk Sweepea, who will always attempt anything you ask of him.

We picked up again with him early in 2010 and he came out with strong placings in his Advanced Horse Trials and the CIC*** at The Fork. He went on to the Bromont CCI*** in Quebec in June where he finished eighth and was honored to bring home the award for Best Conditioned. As an aside ... John would have liked to do the CCI*** at Jersey Fresh but was not allowed to because he is the course designer. At least that's good for Bromont entries!

Best Conditioned Horse at Bromont

Sweepea has really come into his own, and is strong and sure at the Advanced level. He will aim for Fair Hill again this fall, and Rolex in the spring. He still enjoys a good nap, however.

BTW, Sweepea is for sale because John is so busy designing courses that he doesn't have enough time to do Sweepea justice. Sweepea has definite international potential in him, so look out!

Sweepea's background
We first met Sweepea when he wasn't even two years old. He, like Carrick, was bred by Doug Dean. While we were at Doug's looking at older horses, Sweepea poked his head out of the stall to look at us and we put a down payment on him on the spot.

Sweepea is by Doug's young stallion Cozymyn (Cozy Commander had died by this time), who is a full brother to Zydeco, another horse John started and sold. This makes Sweepea a half-brother to Carrick. Sweepea is John's "babe magnet", as all the young girls come up and tell him how cute his horse is.

Sweepea's name suits his personality. He loves people petting him, feeding him and hugging him - although he did go through a phase when he was four of bucking people off.

Like his "big brother" Carrick, Sweepea is fairly laid back and a bit lazy. He sleeps a lot. Even at events he will stretch out flat on the floor for long naps in the middle of the day. His favorite pastime is napping in the sandpit in the sun in his paddock. Sweepea was a little slower than Carrick to mature and begin competing, but once he did, he has done very well. He won the USEF 1-Star Championship in 2005 and has been success at Intermediate since then. In June of 2007, Sweepea was 3rd at the Bromont CCI 2-Star in Canada.

In 2008, Sweepea had a short vacation and then did a Preliminary at Full Gallop and was 3rd. In Intermediate at Five Points he was 8th, followed by a win at Loch Moy and a 4th at Virginia.
