2010 - Summer News from John and Ellen
As the dog days of summer 2010 arrive, we continue to find ourselves as busy as ever, though with a variety of activities. John's popularity as a Cross Country Course Designer continues to grow, as new jobs begin and "old" jobs continue to upgrade their courses. Even in times of economic hardship, people keep Eventing, thank goodness! Perhaps his most exciting new venture is as the Eventing Course Designer for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
We continue to work on developing our little five acre Samara Farm in Southern Pines. The grass in the pasture, now in its second summer, looks great, and we got a little bit of fencing started. John, his father Stephen, and our friend Mark Thompson have been working hard in the summer heat framing the upstairs apartment in the shop building, installing plumbing and wiring, and a million other details. John fits in a few hours whenever he can, but his travel for work has made it a challenge. Our acreage in Virginia finally sold, so that is one thing off our plate. We are officially North Carolina residents.
Ellen started a new business this year, 'Bloom Time'. She plants containers, window boxes and flower beds for homes and businesses. It is slowly growing through word of mouth around town, and allows her to bring in a little money while feeding her passion for planting and designing.
The horses continue to travel to events up and down the East Coast and Canada, though not on quite the hectic schedule we used to keep. Sweepea Dean has really come into his own this year at the Three Star level and Finnegan had a blue ribbon Novice debut. Carrick did a few Horse Trials this spring and will pick back up following the Moore County hounds this fall, and Sloopy has been enjoying semi-retirement hacking around the neighborhood.
As always, we are indebted to the sponsors that continue to help us keep our show on the road. Our horses have eaten nothing but fabulous Pennfield feeds for over ten years now and Kentucky Performance Products and
Kentucky Equine Research provide extra nutritional support. English Riding Supply and Gallops Saddlery make sure everyone looks well turned out at events. Charles Owen and Heritage Gloves look after our heads and hands, Dave Richards at Equicast takes care of the horse's feet, and Boehringer-Ingelheim and the Prescription Shoppe provide medicinal support when the horses require it. Thanks to them all!
Keep cool, see you at an Event soon!
